Along with operating and working with many different organizations across the Greater Toronto Area, Focus on Youth also has camp placements where students are dispersed in different schools and to help the janitorial staff. This creates great opportunities for students to learn the value of hard work. The students can help out the custodial staff with cleaning in tough-to-reach areas, as well as getting the school cleaned in a timely fashion.
Such as any work environment, it will vary from place to place. However, the end goal is the same. Most commonly, our custodial staff will clean lockers, furniture, floors, and baseboards. Their schedules are also very similar, with cleaning different parts of the school with one break for lunch. Since each school is also built differently, the custodians utilize different strategies and tools to get the most done in the least amount of time.
Papa and Nana start their work day at St. Simon at 7:30 AM and begin their regular cleaning routine. This includes: cleaning the desks, tables, and chairs, tidying the classroom, and taking out the trash. Around noon, they take a one-hour break for lunch. After the break, they continue by cleaning more desks and chairs, followed by cleaning the classroom windows. Their day wraps up at 3:30 PM.
The Focus on Youth custodial staff are hardworking, reliable, and caring. They are always doing the best they can to help keep the schools clean and sanitary. Without them, the schools wouldn’t be as clean as they are in September. Although they are not seen as much as the camp counsellors, they are just as important and a very useful aspect of Focus on Youth.
