PROFILE: SJPII Administration

Focus on Youth not only supports students in exploring new opportunities, but also reaches a variety of schools through providing them with energetic, helpful, and eager individuals who assist them with their summer needs. At St. John Paul II Catholic Secondary School, where a summer transitional program takes place from July to August, a diligent student who works in administration ensures that new students are kept in an organized environment. Although her work day consists mainly of collecting attendance, her interactions with incoming grade nines prove valuable in their lives, as she is able to welcome them and offer them insight into the realities of high school. Her work ethic is significant in securing an efficient and safe environment for these students, as she simultaneously eases the worries of teachers and creates an ordered space for kids to enjoy.

This administrative assistant, Rosiefina “Rosie” Sta. Maria, begins her workday consistently, as she strides through each hallway at the school collecting the attendance for each class. After returning each attendance sheet to the school’s main office, Rosie uses the office computer, sorts through files, and takes incoming phone calls when necessary. When Rosie is provided with moments of free time, she finds it useful to speak to students and learn about their upcoming journey and feelings about high school. Whether faced with comments about stress or happiness, Rosie takes the time to provide advice and offer aid whenever necessary.

Her supervisor, educator Karen Tseng, who teaches at the transitional programme, comments on Rosie’s aid and how necessary it has been for the SJPII community. Each member of the administration is constantly supporting their school community by allowing them to stay structured, reducing the weight on the shoulders of other supervisors and facilitating a regulated environment.
