PROFILE: Monsignor Percy Johnson Custodial

Focus on Youth allows TCDSB students to explore a vast variety of environments to explore, aiming to provide the students with new opportunities to learn and develop meaningful skills across the six weeks. An experience that can be beneficial to both Focus on Youth staff as well as the workers of the organization. This can be seen at Monsignor Percy Johnson, where Focus on Youth staff Shant and Miguel help the custodians keep the incredible placement at MPJ running for the campers, coordinators, tutors and camp counselors alike.

Custodial staff responsibilities at MPJ often includes assisting in mopping floors, sweeping, and taking out litter in the yard and building. Their schedules are also structured consistently with times for break, designated areas and lunch. The custodians also often adapt around the lenient schedule depending on how often they may get called to an area, quickly reacting to changes to perform as efficiently as possible.

Shant and Miguel’s first structured tasks consist of checking the field for garbage and litter around the field and schoolgrounds, cleaning the water fountains, and wiping down the cafeteria twice a day first at 12:00PM and then later at 2:00PM. Their secondary, more leanient roles mostly consist of being called for cleanups in the classroom and being mentored by MPJ’s custodian staff on using cleaning machinery.  During breaks, they meet in the staff room where they may wait to be alerted or to discuss and plan for their next responsibility for the day.

Both Shant and Miguel recognize the importance of their responsibility to provide a safe and clean environment for everyone involved at MPJ. Their work and experience here goes beyond their required task, noting the new environment they get to work in and the leadership lessons taught by the MPJ custodial staff allows them to develop better problem solving and communication skills.
