Focus On Youth often collaborates with various external organizations to not only provide extra support to staff but also offer Focus On Youth workers unique experiences that can’t be found elsewhere. These opportunities allow students to learn and develop important lifelong skills, such as time management, determination, focus, independence, and leadership
A prime example of this can be seen through Focus On Youth’s partnership with the JCM custodial staff. This partnership has allowed Afyona Abdulahad, a Focus On Youth student, to work at JCM as a custodian. In her role, Afoyna does everything in her power to ensure a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for everyone who walks through the doors of JCM. She cleans lockers to provide future students with tidy spaces, wipes down doors and windows, and sweeps and mops daily, all in an effort to maintain a sanitary and inviting atmosphere.
A typical day for Afyona begins around 8:30 a.m., when she clocks in and starts cleaning any dirty areas she comes across. She does this for about an hour before taking her first break, during which she reflects on her tasks for the remainder of the day. By 10:00 a.m., Afyona is back at work, usually moving on to dusting and cleaning office spaces for current and future JCM staff. Around 12:00 p.m., she takes a well-earned lunch break to reenergize. At 1:00 p.m., Afyona resumes her duties, once again tackling lockers and any areas in need of sweeping or mopping. Her day usually concludes at around 3:30 p.m., but not before she checks in with her supervisors to ensure there’s nothing more they need assistance with.
Afyona Abdulahad exemplifies the hardworking and independent spirit that Focus On Youth strives to cultivate. As the sole Focus On Youth student at JCM, she supports the janitorial team with grace and determination. Afyona plays a crucial role in maintaining the JCM environment, turning messes into miracles every day, just as so many of the dedicated custodial staff in the Focus On Youth program do.
