Standard BioTools is a life sciences company based in Markham, ON, that develops laboratory instruments and technologies used by researchers to study cells and biology at a detailed level. Their tools are what support work in the advancement of fields such as genomics and immunology, and are used by scientists studying disease research and treatment development.

This placement was made available through Focus On Youth’s connection with Albert Cajilig, the Senior Lead in Operations for Markham and Global Operations at Standard BioTools. This is the third year Standard BioTools has partnered with Focus on Youth, with one student on site, Sharon Corraya.
Her placement was chosen with her future studies in mind, stating “[Standard BioTools] would give me exposure to all of the different fields that I’d be working a part of after university, and it would give me a kind of experience that I really wouldn’t be able to find anywhere else.” Sharon is also provided the opportunity to speak directly with staff working in the field, asking questions and learning more about their roles and their work at Standard BioTools. Her daily routine includes time spent in several departments, including the chemical reagents lab and alongside the software engineering team.
With hands-on exposure, conversations with staff from different departments, and contributing in discussions covering topics of engineering and AI, the placement gives TCDSB students the opportunity to have a broad look at how Standard BioTools operates day-to-day. It offers direct exposure to a STEM-based workplace and combines lab based learning with insight to the engineering and research industry, reflecting the real-world experience Focus On Youth aims to connect students through its external placements.
