Through Focus on Youth, students are encouraged to explore a variety of roles to help them acquire meaningful skills which can help students broaden their horizons over a dynamic six-week period. This year at Monsignor Percy Johnson, students are contributing greatly to help build an incredibly rewarding learning environment for every tutee involved at this placement. These tutors go beyond their responsibility of teaching, they provide a personal support system for each child, helping the children to succeed personally and academically in ways unique to them.

The Focus on Youth tutors at MPJ offers one-hour learning sessions for children in Grades 1 to 8, tackling one subject per session. Subjects can range from mathematics, science, English and French, helping the kids be as prepared as possible to tackle these lessons within the upcoming school year. After each lesson, the tutors also help parents know where their child is excelling and where they may fall behind, ultimately with the intent of helping their child prepare beyond the tutoring classroom at MPJ.

The tutoring position is rewarding for the tutors as well, noting how incredibly motivating it is to teach these kids. Seeing how immensely bright each child is, seeing them overcome academic challenges and having the lightbulb go off for a concept they may have previously been struggling with. This position emphasizes how far great communication can take you as a leader in the Focus on Youth program, and the tutors at MPJ are nothing short of being amazing exemplars of this concept.
